The Annual Shetland Youth Volunteer Awards sponsored by Voluntary Action Shetland, The Rotary Club of Shetland and EnQuest Sullom Voe, took place at a civic reception, hosted by the Shetland Islands Council, in the Lerwick Town Hall on Tuesday 12th November.

Now in it's tenth year the awards are designed to recognise the outstanding efforts of young volunteers in Shetland and the organisations who support them.  This year 19 Organisations, teams of volunteers and individual young volunteers were nominated in the three awards.  Prior to the formal presentation, the 88 guests in attendance were invited to learn of the achievements of each nominee from a colourful poster on display.

At the event, guests were treated to musical entertainment by Skelburn who attended the event.  The four member young band entertained everyone with their eclectic mix of music.

The event was opened by Voluntary Action Shetland's Volunteer Support Worker Kellie Naulls before event compere Caroline Moyes introduced MSP Beatrice Wishart to issue certificates to all of the nominees in each of the three categories.

The first award of the evening, the Organisation Award, was presented by Voluntary Action Shetland's Chairwomen Marilyn Stewart.  Mrs Stewart spoke of the importance of volunteering in Shetland and the benefits it not only had to the community and individuals who volunteer but the benefit to the economy.  Mrs Stewart thanked all the organisations who continue to support youth volunteering before the signature X-Factor style voice named all three nominees, Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, Inferno Dance Group and Shetland Amateur Competitive Swimming Club on the shortlist before an obligatory long pause announced Shetland Amateur Competitive Swimming Club as organisation winners.

Neil Manson of Enquest Sullom Voe was up next to present the "One Team" group of young volunteers award.  Mr Manson said he is delighted that EnQuest were involved in such a worthwhile event supporting young volunteers.  In the One Team category Ability Shetlands Monday Sports Club, Scalloway Peerie Club Volunteers, Shetland Amateur Competitive Swimming Club Youth Coaches and Shetland Year of the Young People Ambassadors were announced to be the four short listed before Ability Shetlands Monday Sports Club were named the 2019 "One Team" winner.

The final award of the evening was the Individual Volunteer Award presented by chairperson of the Rotary Club of Shetland, David Anderson.  Mr Anderson spoke about the high quality of the nominations and how hard it is to judge before wishing all eight candidates in the individual category good luck.  Erin Doull, Shane McDonald, Keir Shannon and Stuart Tait were announced on the shortlist before Keir Shannon a volunteer with Ability Shetland was announced as the overall winner of the Individual category.

Winners: Left to Right: Marilyn Stewart (Chairperson VAS), Shetland Amateur Competitive Swimming Club; Organisation Winners; , Keir Shannon; Individual Volunteer Winner, David Anderson (President Shetland Rotary Club), Ability Shetland's Monday Club; One Team Winners and Neil Manson (EnQuest, Sullom Voe).

SIC Convenor Malcolm Bell closed the ceremony.  Mr Bell thanked Voluntary Action Shetland, EnQuest Sullom Voe and The Rotary Club of Shetland for once again organising and sponsoring the awards.  Mr Bell also thanked all the nominators and acknowledged the nominees for all that their voluntary efforts had achieved.

Volunteer Support Worker, Kellie Naulls said after the event "It has been exciting to have been a part of the 10th Shetland Youth Volunteering Awards.  Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this year a big success.  Congratulations and best wishes to all the nominees and to the winners."

Catherine Hughson, Executive Officer of Voluntary Action Shetland said "another great event showing the continued commitment of people in Shetland to volunteers and give so much to their communities.  So proud of each and everyone a huge thanks to you all."
