Volunteer Film - Listen to what they have to say

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the Shetland Befriending scheme we would be delighted to hear from you. Volunteering with the Shetland Befriending scheme is a lot of fun, challenging and can help you gain new skills and experiences.

Anyone can be a befriender. You do not need to be professionally trained, as training will be given, but you do need to be caring, tolerant, understanding and have a degree of perseverance, in case the relationship is slow to develop. You must also be over the age of 17.

People of all ages and walks of life can be volunteers, students, full-time mums and dads, retired folk, people working full or part-time, or unemployed.

All that we ask is that you commit a few hours a week or fortnight for 6 months initially after having been matched.

Comments from Volunteers and their Experience

“I had a great time, did activities I wouldn’t have done on my own and I have an improved understanding of how to relate to young people”

“Great support from scheme in all areas but specially with the organisation of special activities with other volunteers and young people

“I gained much more than I gave, leaving me with a greater sense of self worth and confidence that I had something to offer another human being”

“I felt it was such a rewarding experience when the child trusted you and you can see that you can make them happy when they are with you”

We currently have a waiting list of individuals who could benefit from the input, so if you think that you can give some time please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
