Community Involvement

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in your local community. Many parents and carers find this a good way of building friendships with others in their area and of gaining new skills. Individuals can get involved in helping to run their local parent and toddler group or playgroup, or other community groups, supporting their local school through the Parent Council or participating in a wide range of community events, groups and associations, where everyone with an interest will be made very welcome.

Voluntary Action Shetland

Voluntary Action Shetland aims to:

  • To  assist the development of voluntary organisations
  • To encourage the voluntary participation of local people in community organisations and volunteering in general

  • To provide practical and advisory services to VAS members (and non-members)

  • To support collaborative activities between voluntary organisations and local statutory bodies

Shetland Befriending Scheme (SBS)

The Shetland Befriending Scheme offers a one to one support service to young people and young adults aged between 7 and 18 years and to adults aged 16+ years of age.  Our volunteers support individuals who can benefit from some additional input. There are a whole range of reasons why individuals may want to be part of our scheme but all can benefit from taking part in engaging in purposeful activities within their local community.
