Looking Ahead

These are exciting times for the Church of Scotland in Shetland as we continue to think about how we can best serve our communities and bring the Good News of Jesus to life for folk in Shetland and beyond.

July saw the introduction of Ellen Weir as the new youth and children's worker for the Church of Scotland in Shetland. This new role brings an exciting challenge for Ellen and for Shetland with a healthy opportunity for youth and children’s work on the isles. She brings a wealth of experience and a sound knowledge of Shetland life. Ellen has a Shetland-wide remit, supporting and encouraging existing work with younger folk throughout the whole of the Shetland Islands, as well as working in partnership with other denominations and initiating new and exciting activities in schools and communities.

For the first few months, Ellen will primarily focus upon visiting all the congregations throughout Shetland where children's activities and youth work is taking place. She will also make contact with leaders of other denominations and organisations who work with children and young people and support families in order to introduce herself and explore future possibilities.

Ellen can be contacted at eweir@churchofscotland.org.uk or on 07587 343 848.

A Shetland-wide Transition Minister Rev. Dr. Francis Henderson took up duties on Wednesday 10th October and resides in the manse at Brae.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the facilitation and development of a Shetland-wide ministry enabled by a team of ministers, support staff and specialist workers. Over the next 5 years, Rev. Henderson will help us to shape the church of the future as we move to one parish with a missional focus. She will provide support for the existing full-time minister, encouraging congregations throughout Shetland to become more pro-active in worship, providing training where required and assisting the Presbytery of Shetland in its resolution to explore a union with the Presbytery of Aberdeen.

In this time of both excitement and difficulty, she will be grateful for all your prayers and support.
