Shetland Youth Volunteering Awards 2017

The eighth Annual Shetland Youth Volunteer Awards sponsored by Voluntary Action Shetland, The Rotary Club of Shetland and BP Sullom Voe, took place in Mareel on Monday the 6th November at a civic reception hosted by Beatrice Wishart, Vice Convenor of the Shetland Islands Council.

This year the planning committee received 38 nominations over the three award categories, Organisation, One Team and Individual Young Volunteer of the year. A series of posters were on display in the auditorium, highlighting each of the nominees volunteering achievements.

Guests were treated to canapés from Hel’s Kitchen and musical entertainment from young musician Sarah Thompson, before taking their seats for the official opening of the event. Compere Caroline Moyes introduced Shetland MSP Tavish Scott who opened the event and issue certificates to all of the nominees in each of the three categories.

Voluntary Action Shetland’s Chairwoman Marilyn Stewart presented the Organisation trophy to Disability Shetland, selected from the short-list of: Disability Shetland, Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, Shetland Befriending Scheme and Shetland Pony Riding School.  

The One Team group of volunteer’s category trophy was presented by Ian Lister of  BP Sullom Voe. 12 teams of volunteers had been nominated this year and short-listed were: The Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Shetland, OPEN Peer Educators, Shetland Budokai Karate Volunteers and Virtually Safe Virtually Sound; Virtually Safe Virtually Sound, a youth project set up to tacking issues relating to internet and digital media safety, was the 2017 One Team winner.

The Final award was the Individual Volunteer Award presented by Mr Stuart Boocock, president of the Rotary Club of Shetland.  Sarah Hazell, Imogen Leslie, Lailey Sinclair and Nethan Watson were shortlisted with Nethan Watson, a volunteer with FAST Football and Wast Lings Ramblers the overall winner of the Individual category.

SIC Depute Convenor Beatrice Wishart closed the ceremony. Mrs Wishart thanked Voluntary Action Shetland BP Sullom Voe and The Rotary Club for once again planning the ceremony. Mrs Wishart thanked all of the nominators and acknowledged the nominees for all that their voluntary efforts had achieved.

Shetland Youth Volunteering Development Worker, Neil Pearson said after the event “We (the Shetland Youth Volunteering Awards Committee) were astounded by the quality of nominations this year, it really did come to the wire in all three categories and that is testament to the real difference these volunteers and their supervisors are making to our small community. Congratulations to all of our winners and to everyone who was nominated and thank you to everyone involved in such a fantastic celebration of youth volunteering”. 

Catherine Hughson, Executive Officer of Voluntary Action Shetland said “ another fantastic night to celebrate volunteering, it always amazes me the commitment of these young people and the difference they make to their communities and the organisations they support, a huge well done to everybody involved”

The 38 posters displayed during the event will be on display In Islesburgh Community Centre from the 1st until the 15th December before they will be given as a gift to each of the nominees.
