                                  Mousa Broch

The broch, or fortified Iron Age tower, on the little island of Mousa is the only one in the world to survive almost complete from more than 2,000 years ago, when it was built as a refuge against raiding local tribes.

Mentioned in the sagas as a refuge for an eloping couple, Mousa Broch is one of the wonders of European archaeology.

Mousa is a home to some amazing wildlife, Storm Petrels nest in its stone, visiting the broch only at night. A night excursion to the broch, to hear their eerie calls, is an experience not to be missed. You may also come across an Otter if you cross their paths.  There are usually grey seals that bask on the shore of Mousa and it's always a pleasure to witness their activites.  If you're lucky you may even catch sight of the Purpoises or even some Killer Whales which are often spotted near the Island.

You can get to this scenic Island by going on the Mousa Boat Trips Ferry run by Tom Jamieson, which does frequent sailings through the day and a midnight run to see the Storm Petrels in the Summer months.
