The Counterweight Programme is the only fully evaluated evidence-based primary care weight management programme in the UK. Counterweight is a structured weight management intervention run by practice nurses based on healthy living and weight management. The programme consists of 6 educational sessions every two weeks held over 3 months, followed by 3 month review.


The aims of Counterweight are to:


• To help change your eating habits and physical activity levels in the long term.
• To help you achieve a medically worthwhile weight loss of between 5-10% of your starting weight.
• To help you maintain your weight loss.
• To improve your health generally.

Counterweight families is a programme for the whole family which aims to help you and your family learn how to improve your health and manage your weight by making small lifestyle changes to your family routine, activity and food intake.

How does it work?

The programme is designed for families who have at least one child of primary age. To be eligible at least one parent/guardian must have a BMI of 30 or above and at least one child with a BMI over the 91st centile. A pre-assessment session can be arranged to assess eligibility.The family meets with a practitioner over a 1 year period to work through the programme.
