to make your life work better

Healthy Working Lives is a national programme for promoting health in the workplace. It provides, free of charge: help with writing health related policies, health related training, support in promoting health information and campaigns, health and safety advice and undertaking health needs assessments. Mental health for managers 2 day course:

Course Description

The training was developed by the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives in partnership with the Scottish Development Centre for Mental Health.

It is designed to encourage good practice in promoting positive mental health and well-being, thereby contributing to a more open culture that puts mental health on the agenda alongside physical health, social inclusion and productivity.

Learning Objectives

The course is designed to:

  • Give employers and line managers a broad understanding of mental health
  • Identify the key factors that contribute to a mentally healthy workplace
  • Increase awareness of mental health issues in the workplace
  • Raise awareness of the economic impact of positive mental health in the workplace
  • Improve managers’ skills and confidence in dealing with mental health and well-being in the workplace
  • Ensure that managers are aware of their legislative responsibilities in relation to health and well-being
Workplace Alcohol and Drug Workshop for Employers and Managers

As well as legal requirements for employers to control risks from substance misuse, raising awareness of alcohol and drugs issues in the workplace has benefits for individuals and for organisations.

Course description

This half-day session will equip employers and managers to deal confidently with drug and alcohol issues amongst their staff.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the impact of drugs and alcohol on the workforce
  • Understand the effects, signs and symptoms of different drugs
  • Be familiar with  law as it relates to drugs and alcohol in the workplace

Stress Less Session

2 hour session or 2 x 1 hour sessions.  Available on a request basis and delivered in your work area or arranged in alternative venue whatever suits your needs.  Sessions are best restricted to a maximum of 12 participants at a time.

This short session was developed by Healthy Working Lives.  It helps to raise awareness of the stress process and why it is important to manage it.  It finishes with some basic techniques for individual stress management. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • List and demonstrate an understanding of the 4 stages of the pressure/release cycle
  • Explain the link between pressure and performance at work
  • Give examples of the physical, psychological and behavioural signs and symptoms of stress
  • List the 6 key areas of stress at work as identified by the Health and Safety Executive and apply to the work setting
  • Describe steps an individual can take to prevent and/ or deal with stress
