Shetland Canoe Club is based in the Shetland Islands, and is therefore Britain’s most northerly canoe club. We are mainly a sea kayaking club, with most of our activities geared to touring, though some members have been known to try surfing, not to mention the odd visit to the mainland for a bit of river paddling.
The club has a training session every Thursday evening in summer at Bridge End Outdoor Centre in Burra Isle, and most Thursdays in winter in the Clickimin Pool in Lerwick. Also in summer there is a programme of short trips on Tuesday evenings and a longer trip most Sundays. The club also organises annual weekend meets at Papa Stour and Unst, and the Shetland Sea Kayak Symposium which happens every second year. The next one is scheduled for July 2008.
Every year in March the club holds an open night for new members in the Clickimin Pool followed by a programme of training, starting in the pool and moving on to the sea at Bridge End after Easter. This is the best time for beginners to join. Experienced paddlers are welcome at any time.
