Disability Awareness Training

Disability Shetland can hold training sessions for businesses on Disability Awareness.  The training session will be tailored to the businesses needs and the time committment is approximately 1.5 hours. 
The aims of the generic training are as follows:-
  1. Challenge your perceptions of disability
  2. Promotion of inclusive thinking
  3. Remove the unease when communicating with people who have a disability

Shetland Recreational Trust Trains Staff in Disability Awareness

A business that has undertaken our Disability Awareness Training includes the Shetland Recreational Trust (SRT).  The SRT have undertaken the training over the past 6 months in all of their leisure centres throughout Shetland.  A spokesperson from the Shetland Recreational Trust said "The feedback from the staff that have completed the training has been very positive and hopefully they can use what they have learned to ensure that we as an organisation can continue to deliver the best possible service to our users."

Scoop Wholefoods Trains Staff in Disability Awareness

All nine staff at Scoop Wholefoods undertook disability awareness training , provided by Disability Shetland.

The training , held in Scoop and tailored to meet the needs of the business, included challenging perceptions of disabilities, promoting inclusive thinking and effective communication techniques.  It also included assisting customers as soon as they enter their shop.

Scatsta Airport Trains Staff in Disability Awareness 

Eleven Serco Defence, Science and Technology Employess based at Scatsta Airport undertook Disability Awareness Training, provided by Disability Shetland on the 19th July 2008.

The training was tailored to allow employees a better understanding of the needs of passengers who have disabilities; this included the searching of passengers, access to and from the Terminal Building and Aircraft, dealing with restricted doorways, and access barriers that may be encountered.  The course content was designed to comply with regulations within the aviation industry, promote inclusive thinking and allow effective communication techniques.
